Fields of Green takes place in the second half of the 20th century. Players take the role of farm owners trying to expand their property and business. By adding fields, livestock and facilities, they build an economic engine that will bring them closer to victory.

Fields of Green, inspired by Among the Stars, is played over four rounds (years) during which players draft cards and add them to their ever-expanding farms. At the end of each year comes the harvest season when they must water their fields, feed their livestock, and pay maintenance costs in order to receive valuable resources that will allow them to further expand in the next year.

Through various means, player eventually convert their wealth to victory points, and the player who gathers the most by the end of the fourth year wins.

    I enjoyed Fields of Green a lot. It's more than just a reskinning of Among the Stars, as there are several improvements. In the game you need to tend to your farm, grow it and make it the best possible.

    Each player starts with one water tower full of 3 water, a silo containing food and some money. The game takes place over a period of four years. At the beginning of each year you get some water, some food and some money and you get to draft 6 cards from one of four different piles: Fields, Livestock, Constructions and Buildings. For beginners, there are suggestions how many cards to take from each of the different piles. You must take cards from at least three out of the four piles. You then choose one card and pass the rest to the player on your left, who, in turn, chooses one of those and pass it again. You can also discard a card to get money, to build a new silo (space for more food), to get a water tower (you’ll need to pay some money too) or to turn a face down card up. You can play a card and add it to your tableau by paying its cost (food, water etc.). Some cards played have an immediate effect (field cards give you food, construction cards let you do different things, buildings are worth points at the end of the game and livestock cards give you money). You need to know where to place the cards in your tableau as they might affect the cards around them in different ways. This reminded me of Rivals for Catan, another great game with square cards. At the end of the turn harvest happens and some cards have special effects then. There are also some end of game effects.

    I liked the fun drafting mechanism from different piles, which is different than Among the Stars where there was only one pile of cards to draft from.

    There are also equipment tiles that you get to choose from, which give you additional benefits, another nice addition that makes for a more interesting game in my opinion.

    I was surprised how well the mechanism fit the theme. The game's footprint on the table is big, but the beautiful presentation more than makes up for it and you actually feel like you are tending to real-world fields and farms. Overall it's a fun game and easy to teach. Highly recommended.
